Design Engineer II

Job Summary:
The objective of this position is to support all phases of product design within the assigned platform teams by way of the completion of tasks to meet planned product quality, cost, performance objectives and other technical objectives of development projects; ensuring international standards are met for global manufacture and sale of Road Products. This position also focuses on product application and the technical integration of the various technologies on the product.
Main Tasks/ Responsibilities / Authorities:

  • Initiate and develop design concepts to meet cost objectives, schedule, machine parameters and criteria by use of layouts and installation drawings. Perform layouts via solid modeling,using Division CAD system, with projects assigned by supervisor.

  • Develop and perform basic stress/system calculations using Division CAE (such as FEA) and also implement design improvements and cost reductions across the entire product line.
  • Should have a basic understanding of the financial impact of Engineering on the business.

  • Interface with vendors and suppliers to locate and approve components.

  • Must be able to utilize production control business system and personal computer programs such as Excel, Word, Power Point, etc.

  • Write work instructions for prototype and test technicians. Monitor prototype builds and assure proper assembly. Implement product design concepts for manufacturability with Manufacturing Engineering.

  • Review, analyze and report on product parameter compliance via test reports, spec sheets, etc. Develop action plans to meet compliance if necessary.

  • Must be able to coordinate with all necessary departments within the Division in order to develop and produce new designs.

  • Communicate with supervisor, project team and management of project status with any recommendations to meet schedules and plans.

  • Works in specific Engineering functional technology or product line (ie, hydraulics, electrics, pavers, etc)

  • Interface with Service Team members

  • Perform Root Cause Analysis at machine level

  • Provide Quality Reports for Product Platform Management

  • Coordinate with Technology Platforms on testing & problem resolution

  • Be able to manage multiple small projects, including schedules, costs, etc with limited scope, communicates progress with supervisor

  • Must demonstrate a high degree of problem solving ability.

Key Skills:

  • Develops complex design concepts into tangible, workable machine details. Requires technical knowledge concerning drafting and design disciplines, product cost, and product performance. Reports to Group/Team Leader along with Draftspersons, Designers and any other Design Engineers. This position has no subordinates.

  • The most frequent internal contacts are Marketing, Sourcing, Service, protoshop, engineering information administration, the MIS department and other members within the department or NPD team. This is to facilitate the development, testing and release of designs using the Engineering Change Process. The most frequent external contacts are with suppliers. Some travel is required, usually domestic.

  • The job's greatest challenge is the timely development of design solutions to improve and update existing models or develop new products and keep up with the latest in technology in the field of expertise.


Education/Professional Qualifications required for the position:
The incumbent must possess a BS in engineering or physics discipline and 2 - 5 years of experience.
Additional Important Requirements:
Must be able to sit at a desk or stand at an assigned location and work continuously for extended periods of time, utilizing assigned office equipment. Must be able to walk through the production facility to work with manufacturing personnel. Must be able to operate and test machines or components. At times may lift materials weighing up to 20 pounds.
